EPUSP
District Directors
The role of the EPUSP district directors in El Paso, Socorro,
and Ysleta School Districts is to provide district support for
improved academic achievement in mathematics and science. Major
focuses are to improve not only the quality of the content and
curriculum being taught but also to incorporate standards-based
best teaching practices aimed at providing all students the
opportunity to succeed at high academic levels. At the campus
level, the EPUSP directors guide the work of the EPUSP mentor
teachers, who in turn work directly with classroom teachers
at target USP schools. The directors also provide professional
development for campus teachers, administrators and counselors
in areas such as: data analysis; content development in mathematics
and science; standards-based best practices in mathematics,
science, and technology; instructional leadership; and leading
and supporting reform efforts. In addition, the directors collaborate
with district central office administrators and curriculum and
instructional personnel to promote local district USP goals
and institutionalize mathematics and science reform efforts
within each district.
Other EPUSP district director duties include:
- Communicating
with principals on a regular basis to build campus capacity
in order to support standards-based reform efforts.
- Monitoring
the work of the mentors as they establish “model classrooms”
in science and mathematics by
- visiting classrooms,
- observing lesson presentations,
- communicating with lead learner teachers, department chairs
and administrators, and
- conferencing with mentor teachers.
- Supporting
mentor teachers in the use of professional development tools
such as Content Focused Coaching and Lenses on Learning.
- Promoting the
use of standards-based best practices and theories within
lead learner teacher classrooms and within the entire school.
- Assisting mentor
teachers in implementing mathematics/science workshops to
extend the content knowledge of teachers in the district.
- Supporting
and coordinating campus and district-wide mathematics/ science/technology
activities.
- Building school
district organizational capacity to support academic improvements
in mathematics/ science/technology.
EPUSP Mentors
The major goal of EPUSP mentor teachers is to assist teachers,
campuses, and individual districts implement mathematics and
science standards-based instruction and learning. EPUSP mathematics
and science mentor teachers in the El Paso, Socorro and Ysleta
Independent School Districts work with lead learner teachers
in target feeder pattern schools in order to support high quality,
standards-meeting mathematics and science curriculum and instruction,
and use of the technology to enhance and facilitate learning.
EPUSP mentor teachers coordinate with district level representatives,
department chairs and lead learner teachers to create structures
to support academic reform. The mentor teachers strive to build
the capacity of the lead learner teachers so that they can sustain
the reform efforts within their campuses when the mentor teachers
are reassigned to assist new campuses. Mentor teachers also
work district-wide with curriculum and instruction staff to
provide professional development, align the curriculum and support
mathematics and science initiatives aimed at improving student
achievement.
Stated in more specific terms, some of the duties of the EPUSP
mentor teachers include:

“model standards-based classrooms” in science
and mathematic at each grade level in targeted schools by

- Planning and reflecting with lead learners regarding lesson
presentations and curriculum taught,
-

-
Assisting teachers evaluate student work.

learners so that they can work with other classroom teachers
to design, implement, and reflect on rigorous, standards-based
lessons.
- Scheduling
and facilitating grade/department level meetings.
- Conducting
professional development in mathematics/science/technology
to extend the content knowledge and instructional expertise
of teachers in the school.

and coordinating campus visits and district-wide mathematics/
science/technology activities.

leveraging resources within assigned EPUSP schools, among
feeder schools, and at the district level.
