El Paso Partnership for Technology Integration
1998-2003

Led by the El Paso Collaborative for Academic Excellence, UTEP’s College of Education, and the ESC-Region 19, the main goal of the Technology and Education Challenge Grant was to provide professional development to teachers in the application of educational technologies to support high student academic achievement. At the university level, the objectives were:

  • to provide over 200 practicing professionals with a master’s degree and graduate endorsement specializations in the integration of educational technology in the classroom;
  • to provide 100 mid-management certification candidates tuition incentives to include the course, Educational Technology Leadership, in their program;
  • to re-fit certain pre-service teacher preparation courses to incorporate educational technology; and,
  • to install a new computer lab and upgrade two existing labs in content teacher preparation courses were taught.

The results of data collection and analysis of the Challenge grant by an external evaluator demonstrated that all of the goals of the initiative were met at a high level. For example the Challenge model of intense and sustained professional development resulted in a broad base of over 700 teachers across the region who received professional development focused on enhancement of teaching and learning through technology. In addition, Challenge had an impact and generated valuable lessons that have continued to inform the work of educational reform.
